Marriage

The union between a man and a woman is recognized as Marriage. You can get married in a civil marriage ceremony before the registrar of marriages, or in a religious ceremony by an authorised person of the religion which you and your partner follow.

Your choice of form of marriage will determine your legal rights in the marriage. If you marry in a civil ceremony before the marriage registrar your rights and liabilities will be governed by Special Marriage Act. For marriages performed as per Hindu rites/ ceremonies or Nikah before Qazi or a church wedding, the rights and liabilities are under the personal laws of Hindus, Muslims or Christians respectively.

All marriages must be registered with the Marriage Registrar in your district. Men are eligible for marriage only once they are 21 and women are eligible for marriage only once they are 18.
